Obesity has become an epidemic on a global scale and poses one of the greatest threats to human health and wellbeing. Similarly, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes – inextricably linked with obesity – continues to grow. Does improving glycaemic control have to come at the cost of weight gain? Is weight loss a sensible strategy for glycaemic control? Questions such as these highlight the fact that obesity and diabetes are not only linked in terms of pathophysiology, they are also intertwined on a number of levels when it comes to clinical management.
“Diabesity” is a term for the common clinical association of these conditions, and
the National Diabesity Forum (NDF) has been conceived to improve and share
knowledge of the integrated management of both challenges among healthcare
professionals. On behalf of the NDF, I would like to take this opportunity to invite
you to join us at our first national conference as we strive to provide a network
for all healthcare professionals – whether specialist or generalist – involved in the
management of diabesity.
